The Butterfly Residence is a renovation and expansion of a beloved Mid-Century Modern home in Austin, merging mid-century charm with the way a family lives today.
We restored the formal living area with its grand piano and sunken seating, opened a light-filled library, and added a northern wing holding a media room, dining area and kitchen beneath a beamless vaulted ceiling clad in hemlock, met by a floor-to-ceiling glass wall.
A cedar-clad carport with floating roof forms and a butterfly roof — directing rainwater into a sustainable drainage system — give the home its name and its quiet environmental logic. A new principal suite, two work-from-home spaces and a redesigned backyard complete the transformation.
